Vodafone TV and broadband coming spring 2015

Vodafone has revealed that it will launch its own broadband and TV service in the UK in the spring of 2015.

As with most of the other UK broadband services, Vodafone will utilise BT’s Openreach infrastructure alongside its own business fibre network to support its new broadband service.

Pricing is yet to be disclosed, but it will have to be pretty cheap if it’s to compete in an increasingly crowded scene that includes BT, Virgin, Sky, and mobile network rival EE.

This won’t be the first time that the mobile network has tried its hand at offering its customers a broadband service. However, back at the tail end of 2011, Vodafone decided to scrap its failing Vodafone At Home offering and pass its remaining customers over to PlusNet.

In 2012, the company bought Cable & Wireless’s fibre optic network, but used it to offer broadband services to businesses rather than homes.

Virtually nothing is known about the type of TV offering Vodafone is planning. Whether this will be a custom-made box or a partnership with another media company, we’ll have to wait and see.

Of course, with main rival EE offering its own broadband service and now launching a TV box of its own, the pressure was always going to be on Vodafone to respond. With online services in the home seemingly converging into a single box, the network giant can’t afford to be left behind.

Vodafone will offer its own take on a combined mobile, broadband, and TV service some time in the spring.
