The Vodafone Smart 2 is out now from - predictably enough - Vodafone. It costs just £70 and is an Android smartphone, giving you access to such goodies as Angry Birds, WhatsApp Messenger and high-speed mobile internet access on the cheap.

This second Vodafone Smart handset is also a significant hardware upgrade of the first. The capacitive screen has been bumped up from 2.8in to 3.2in, there's a reasonably 800MHz processor on-board and resolution has been upped from a blocky 240 x 320 to 320 x 480 pixels.

The Vodafone Smart 2 runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread, has full access to the Google Play app store and there's a 3.2-megapixel camera on its back, complete with LED flash. Limitations include the slightly chunky 12.35mm bod and teeny 150MB internal memory - although a 2GB microSD card is included. The cheapy phone comes in two finishes, black and white.

A phone aimed at the Pay as you go market, the Vodafone Smart 2 costs £70 up-front and comes with a Simply plan SIM card as standard. This pre-pay plan charges you 25p per minute for calls and 12p per text. However, with Vodafone Freebees rewards you can get yourself free texts, 500MB mobile internet or other perks when you top up at least £10 a month.

The Vodafone Smart 2 has a lot of competition from phones like the Huawei Blaze and slightly-pricier Orange San Francisco 2, but it seems to have solved some of the most serious problems of its predecessor. We'll be back with the full verdict soon.
