Vodafone Plans 21Mbit Mobile Broadband Trials

Soon will there be any need for a fixed line?

Just got your head around ‘HSDPA’? Well, it could soon be time to move on…

Vodafone has today announced it has just successfully completed trials of 16Mbit ‘HSPA+’ using technology (yes the acronym got a little better) on its Spanish network and says it has plans to test 21Mbit HSPA+ in the first quarter. Vodafone claimed this latter technology should deliver real world download speeds of up to 13Mbit in good conditions and guarantee a minimum of 4Mbit across its entire network.

“Successfully demonstrating a live HSPA+ high speed connection has been a key milestone in continuing to build confidence in this new technology,” declared Vodafone Global Networks Director Andy MacLeod. “The results show that HSPA+ technology is well placed to further enhance our customers’ mobile broadband experience through the evolution of our existing 3G networks.”

Timeframes for a real world roll-out? Sadly we weren’t that lucky but it does beg the question of how much longer we’re really going to need our landlines. BT, feel free to start shaking uncontrollably anytime…
