New VLC Windows 10 beta arrives, Xbox One version incoming

VLC has gained a reputation as one of, if not the best media players available, with its support for seemingly every file format and codec ever invented.

Now Windows 10 users have been gifted with a new beta version of the popular media player, which packs in much more Windows 10 functionality.

VideoLAN’s new release is designed to work on the Universal Windows Platform, and comes with all the standard VLC features, alongside new functionality specific to Windows.

Alongside the usual media library and network browser, Windows users also get the ability to use VLC in tandem with the Cortana virtual assistant using voice commands.

There’s also support for live tiles and Continuum, for those that often dock and un-dock their tablets.

And it doesn’t end there. VideoLAN also teased forthcoming Xbox One, Surface Hub, and HoloLens support, which should arrive once the unified Windows/Xbox app store launches this summer.

Those still using Windows 8.1 will have to wait a few weeks before the new app will work, as it currently supports Windows 10 desktop, tablets, and mobile devices.

Still, the new beta certainly packs in some interesting features that make it a more impressive offering than the standard Windows 10 desktop version, which has been available for some time.
