Vine lives on as Twitter announces pared-down Vine Camera app

Last month Twitter announced it’d be shutting down its short-form video app Vine, much to the chagrin of the app’s dwindling, yet sizable following.

Now, perhaps in response to the calls to spare the medium, Twitter has announced it is keeping Vine alive, albeit with a much simpler new app called Vine Camera, which will be available in January.

As before, users will be able to shoot six second videos and share them via Twitter or save them to the camera roll, but that’s about it.

Twitter is still closing down the Vine community and there’ll be no means of viewing other folks videos through the app.

To atone for this loss, the company will roll out a way to assist followers find content creators and follow them on Twitter instead.

Vine is also rolling out an update today that allows Viners to download their content directly from the app.

“All of your Vines will continue to live on the vine.co website so you can browse all of the amazing videos you created over the years,” the Twitter added in a blog post on Friday.

“Thank you for the culture that you have helped shape, and for the content you’ll continue to make everywhere. You make the world a funnier, weirder, richer, more beautiful place.”
