Vine app finally arrives on Android

Vine, the six-second looping video creator application, is finally available on the Android OS platform.

Launching in January, Vine was only originally available for iOS devices like the iPhone 5 and iPad mini, but from today will be available for Android.

Four months after the app launched for iOS, the Android Vine app can be downloaded for free now from the Google Play store, where Android device owners can create their own 6-second videos.

“Android owners: Welcome to Vine. Starting today, you can begin to shoot, share and watch short looping videos,” said Sara Haider, Android Engineer for Twitter in an official blog post. “We’ve been looking forward to this day, and we’re excited to get the app into your hands.”

The app already has over 13 million registered users and has been touted as a powerful journalistic tool as well as a modern art form by its critics.

It allows users to create 6-second long looping videos that are essential GIFs with audio, but have been used by a gradually expanding creative userbase. Vines have been used for compact movie trailers like Wolverine, videogame teaser trailers like Battlefield 4, and controversially for amateur porn clips.

Android users will gain exclusive access to a new Vine feature called Zoom, as well the Explore and share functions of the iOS app.

Twitter has confessed that the Android and iOS Vine apps are not yet “perfectly in sync”, as the Android app is still well behind the functionality of the iOS app. However, those inconsistencies won’t be around for long.

“Over the coming weeks, you’ll see frequent updates with new features – including front-facing camera, search, mentions and hashtags, and the ability to share to Facebook,” added Haider. “Of course, this is only the beginning – we have exciting plans for features that could exist only on Android.”

Fans of the service can download the Android Vine app now from the Google Play store for free.
