Vimeo has officially launched its pay-to-view service, Vimeo On Demand, which will allow Vimeo Pro members to sell their creations directly to the public.

Available from today to all Vimeo Pro subscribers, Vimeo On Demand gives creators the option to sell their work to the public and retain and 90 per cent share of the revenue. Vimeo take 10 per cent to deal with the transaction costs.

Creators are allowed to set their own prices for their work, choose which countries to make their work available to and customise their Vimeo page design. Vimeo On Demand also enables users to offer their creative content via the Vimeo site, as well as their own websites.

“Vimeo is committed to empowering creators with tools to display and distribute their work in beautiful HD quality,” said Kerry Trainor, Vimeo’s CEO. “With the addition of Vimeo on Demand, creators can now use Vimeo to control the way they earn revenue and retain a significant portion of the proceeds.”

According to Trainor, Vimeo currently has around 15 million members and around 93 million monthly views, and takes its income from content creator subscriptions, advertising and from transactions such as the purchase of music tracks featured in the videos.

“What used to be a confusing and labour-intensive process is now open and simple with Vimeo On Demand,” explained Vimeo’s Vice President of Creative Development, Blake Whitman. “We always strive to provide our community and visitors with the best experience possible, and this opens up a new world of viewable content and support for creators.”

Originally founded in 2004, Vimeo has been growing fast over the past four years. The addition of the Vimeo On Demand service should only serve to increase its growing userbase. Any purchased content from the pay-to-view service will be able to watch across a variety of devices, including desktops, Android, iOS and Windows platforms, set top boxes and smart TVs.

“We are proud of this first phase of Vimeo On Demand, and we’re already working on another suite of creator-focused features to release in the near future,” added Whitman.
