Lets go of deadwood (just like HBO *sniff*)
When Google bought YouTube in October 2006 for a now bargain $1.65bn the writing looked on the wall for the company’s own ‘Google Video’. Well, it’s been a slow death but we’re finally here…
Actually, that’s a little harsh. What Google is killing are user uploads with the search giant deciding it wants to refocus on using the service as a search aggregator.
“In a few months, we will discontinue support for uploads to Google Video,” announced Google on its official blog.” Don’t worry, we’re not removing any content hosted on Google Video — this just means you will no longer be able to upload new content to the service. We’ve always maintained that Google Video’s strength is in the search technology that makes it possible for people to search videos from across the web, regardless of where they may be hosted. And this move will enable us to focus on developing these technologies further to the benefit of searchers worldwide.”
In actual fact this is the slickest language I’ve ever heard to essentially say ‘We’re not duplicating content any longer. We paid $1.65bn for YouTube for heaven’s sake!’ And to be fair, who can blame them?
Aside from Video, Google has confirmed Dodgeball, Catalogs, Mashup Editor, Jaiku and Notebook are also all on their way out. Jaiku (code released to volunteers) and Notebook (developer resources canned) could stagger on for a little while longer but I know dead men walking when I see them.
