US women’s soccer star Alex Morgan to grace FIFA 16 cover

World Cup winning striker Alex Morgan will be the first female athlete to grace the cover of EA Sports FIFA gaming franchise, it was announced on Monday.

The 26-year-old United States international will feature alongside Lionel Messi on the FIFA 16 game in her homeland. Meanwhile, Canada skipper Christine Sinclair will get the honour in the game’s release north of the border.

This marks the first time women’s national teams have been available to play within the classic football franchise.

“It is an incredible honor to be one of the first women featured on the cover,” said Morgan.

I know people all over the world play this game and I’m really excited that FIFA 16 is putting such an important spotlight on women’s soccer. And now to share the cover with today’s greatest player is surreal.”

EA has added that the selection of the cover stars is an important part of its marketing leading up to big franchise releases.

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson recently won a fan vote to star alongside Messi in the UK.

Meanwhile, New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. will grace the cover of Madden NFL 16 in the hope of escaping the fabled “Madden curse”.
