Unreal Engine 3 comes to web browsers

Mozilla and Epic Games have worked together to bring the latter’s advanced Unreal Engine 3 to web browsers.

Unreal Engine 3 drives many of today’s top console games, yet Mozilla has managed to get it working through web browsers without the aid of plugins.

Mozilla itself broke the news over on its official blog. It achieved the feat by compiling a heavily optimised version of JavaScript. The result is Unreal Engine 3 performance that roughly matches that of native games.

Despite this impressive level of 3D performance, the process of porting Unreal Engine 3 to web browsers took just four days to complete. The result will be the ability “to distribute visually stunning and performance intensive games to billions of people more easily and cost effectively than before.”

Apparently all of the work Mozilla has done with Epic will flow into the Firefox web browser for Android, plus of course Mozilla’s own fledgling Firefox OS.

An intriguing by-product of this will be the potential for running complex 3D web games through mobile browsers. Mozilla is already working with established players in the mobile games industry such as EA, Zeptolab (the makers of Cut The Rope) and Disney to optimise their games in this way.

What do you think of Mozilla’s efforts? Are you looking forward to being able to play console-standard games through your web browser, or would you rather keep such experiences to your living room telly and native PC games? Let us know in the comments sections below.
