Unity adding native support for Google Cardboard platform

Game making software Unity will soon benefit from native support for the Google Cardboard platform.

The integration will make it easier for developers to create experiences that work with Cardboard, whether users are inserting iOS or Android devices.

This will allow more experiences to become available to those seeking out VR for the first time via an inexpensive Cardboard headset.

News of the accord between Google and Unity emerged at the latter’s Vision Summit currently taking place in Hollywood, CA (via VentureBeat).

Last month Google revealed it had shipped 5 million Google Cardboard headsets in total. That has led to 30 million downloads of the various apps and games already compatible with Cardboard.

Native support for Unity should only add to the array of quickly improving options for those seeking immersive 360-degree content.

The affordable (and often free) Google Cardboard headsets have been partially responsible for the groundswell of support for VR experiences.

Consumers who’ve used a low-tech Cardboard device may be among those snapping up an Oculus Rift, HTC Vive Pre or PlayStation VR headset when they launch in the coming months.

Google of course, recently let on it is working on a more advanced VR handset of its own and will surely be seeking to harvest the crop of Cardboard aficionados itself.
