British smartphone users are the world’s most data hungry, a new report has suggested, as the UK tops a list of online smartphone use.

Leading the world’s 17 most developed nations in data consumption, the new report, compiled by regulatory body Ofcom, has suggested that whilst the UK has one of the highest smartphone penetration levels, with 58 per cent of the population owning a smartphone device, it currently tops the list of mobile data usage.

According to the findings, in December 2011, the average UK-based smartphone owner used 424MB of data per month, more than any other national average. With the tech savvy Japanese markets lining up second in the data usage charts with a monthly average of 392MB, the US was only sixth with a 319MB monthly usage.

“Our research reveals that the UK leads the way in using the internet on the move,” said James Thickett, Ofcom’s Director of Research says. “Increasingly, it’s mobile devices like smartphones and tablets that are driving this growing demand for data – and in the UK it seems to be social networking sites that are behind this in particular.”

He added: “UK consumers continue to benefit from one of the most advanced markets for communications products and services.”

With one sixth of all UK web traffic now coming from mobile devices, the Ofcom report has found that 6 per cent of Brits use their smartphone as their primary means of accessing the web. With social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook driving much of smartphone based web traffic, 40 per cent of UK adults admitted to using their handsets to visit social sites. Unsurprisingly, a larger percentage of 18-24 year olds (62 per cent) use their smartphones to access social networking outlets, more than any other country.

“What’s clear from this report is that Britain is a nation of early adopters,” Ernest Doku, a telecoms expert at uSwitch said. “We're not only the most data-hungry in the world when it comes to using mobile internet on our smartphones, but we're also global leaders in embracing new TV technology too.”
