Micro blogging site Twitter has hit a new user milestone with the social media service recording 200 million active monthly users for the first time.
Despite Twitter’s active monthly user figures having topped 200 million for the first time, up from the 140 million users recorded back in May, the latest milestone moment marks less than half of all registered Twitter users, with more than 500 million people now signed up to the Facebook rival.
Whilst a Twitter spokesperson has suggested that the rapid rise in user figures has been driven by people discovering Twitter for the first time, the company has suggested that France is one nation to have seen “huge growth” in recent months, thanks in large to the country’s recent presidential election.
“There are now more than 200M monthly active @twitter users. You are the pulse of the planet. We’re grateful for your ongoing support!” Tony Wang, Twitter’s UK General Manager Tweeted in announcing the news.
With the active user base said to have grown thanks to a number of global events such as the London 2012 Olympic Games, US Presidential Election and Felix Baumgartners space jump, new figures have revealed that around 10 million of the current 200 million active users are based in the UK.
Frequently used as a tool for reacting to current events, Twitter has become increasingly mobile in recent months with reports revealing 60 per cent of users accessing the service do so through dedicated Twitter smartphone and tablet apps. What’s more, 80 per cent of users are said to use social site by mobile devices.
Continuing to evolve to user’s needs, Twitter last week introduced a number of new imaging filters to its app-based services, allowing users to forgo Instagram, which is no longer compatible with the 140 character feeds, whilst continuing to post effect laden pictures.
