Twitter sparks rage and Project Lightning rumours by resetting users’ backgrounds

Twitter has wiped all customised backgrounds from users’ profiles without explanation.

The social network has lumbered us all with the same light-grey wallpaper, which hasn’t gone down especially well.

Some disgruntled users have described it as “awful” and “blinding white”.

The company has confirmed that the changes have been made intentionally, but hasn’t yet explained its reasons for doing so.

“We’re removing background images from the home and notifications timelines on web for all users,” a Twitter spokesperson told Mashable.

“Now, background images are only available where logged-in users will see them publicly (Tweet pages, list pages and collections pages). You can find help center content about customizing your design and where it’s visible on Twitter here.”

Many people are speculating that the company will soon reveal a dramatic new layout.

Others reckon the move comes as a precursor to the launch of Project Lightning, a new media-rich product that Twitter hopes will make it the perfect destination for breaking news online and following live events.

Interestingly, individual Tweets are still plastered on top of your old wallpaper, which you can resurrect by re-uploading your chosen image through the Design section in the Settings menu.

Unfortunately, logging out will take you straight back to grey.
