Twitter’s live-streaming Periscope app comes to Android

Twitter has finally launched its live-streaming video app on Android.

Yup, ‘Periscope’ has been available for two months on iOS, and has now made the switch to Google’s mobile OS.

The app is currently available to download for free on the Google Play store, and will work on any device running Android 4.4 (KitKat) or later.

Periscope had a frankly spectacular launch, smashing through the 1 million users milestone in just ten days.

It’s also been a big hit with celebrities, journalists, and, unsurprisingly, media pirates keen to stream copyrighted content unlawfully over the web using the service.

The Android app is largely the same as its iOS cousin, although there are a few minor differences.

For instance, you have to press a big, red button to start a broadcast on Android. The app also takes design cues from Google’s Material Design aesthetic, but it’s otherwise very similar.

“When you go into a broadcast, it’s going to be very much like the standard Periscope that you have come to know and love, with the hearts and comments and all of that,” explained Sara Haider, Periscope’s Android lead.

Twitter first purchased Periscope back in March, and subsequently launched the app later that month.

At the time, Twitter’s Kevin Well said: “Excited to officially welcome Periscope to the Twitter team. Can’t wait for everyone to see what they’ve built!”
