Twitter’s “Beyond 140” project could stretch character limit to 10,000

Twitter may finally be ready to abandon the 140-character limit that’s been its key identifier since day one.

A Re/code report on Tuesday identifies an initiative called “Beyond 140”, which could see the limit stretched to a whopping 10,000 characters.

The report says that only the first 140 characters would be visible, with Twitter users having to expand the tweet to reveal the full text.

As a result, the Twitter timeline would remain much the same, but would require greater action from users in order to get the full picture, so to speak.

A change to Twitter’s most iconic feature appears to have been on the cards for quite some time – and was rumoured back in September – as the company resorts to ever more desperate tactics to attract new users.

In terms of growth the social network has remained relatively static compared to the likes of Facebook and the apps it owns, such as Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp. The likes of Snapchat are also exceeding Twitter.

The company recently abandoned the character limit for direct messages, increasing it to the 10,000 floated in Project “Beyond 140”.

Ditching it in actual tweets would represent the most drastic measure yet under the stewardship of returning CEO Jack Dorsey.

Do you agree with Twitter’s reported plans? Or would having to expand every tweet to see the full content drive you further away from Twitter’s loving embrace? Share your thoughts below.
