Trusted Voice unlock feature now hitting some Android devices

Google is rolling out a new security tool for Android users, allowing them to unlock their smartphone or tablet using voice recognition technology.

The Trusted Voice feature, appeared as part of the Google Play Services app last week but was not yet functional. Now it’s becoming available to many users, according to an Android Police report (via Engadget).

As the name suggests, Trusted Voice works will allow users to by-pass the device’s security simply by saying “OK Google.” From there, users will be able to make use of the “OK Google” feature to issue commands as usual.

When setting up the feature, Google warns it is less secure than a pattern, pin or password method, due to the ability of a third party to use a recording of your voice or a similar voice to gain access to the device.

The Trusted Voice feature joins Trusted Face, which uses facial recognition, the location-based Trusted Places feature and the Trusted Devices option, which turns off the device lock when the device is in the vicinity of another gadget, like a smartwatch.

It’s not yet clear when the feature will become accessible to all Android users, so keep your eye out for its appearance in the Smart Lock settings on your Android device.
