Triple A mobile games aren’t too far away, says Square Enix developer
Triple A console titles for mobile gamers are not too far off, developer Square Enix has claimed.
Yube Abe, Game Design Director of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13 revealed that mobile technology is advancing at such a rapid rate we could see AAA console-style titles land on smartphones and tablets sooner than originally predicted.
“
A few older consoles games have already made the transition to mobile, including high-profile titles like GTA: San Andreas, but there’s hardly a wealth of AAA mobile games at present.
In fact, the mobile game industry is saturated with casual titles like Angry Birds and Cut the Rope.
“It’s a chaotic market at the moment, but certainly the mobile games industry is very popular and it’s maybe coming up to parity with consoles.”
However, if Abe is correct, we may soon see mobile specific AAA titles akin to what we’re used to on dedicated games consoles in the near future.
“The idea of playing casual games and then transferring over to playing hardcore or core games on consol, that might happen, but it’s not the only way it could happen. You’re going to have people that just play on mobiles and there’s going to be core games for them. It’s not one clearly defined evolutional process really, it’s quite in flux at the moment.”
Of course, Abe couldn’t provide any kind of timeline for AAA mobile titles, but they may well not be that far off.
