For quite a while now the Retina Display on the iPhone 4 and 4S has been the leader of the pack in terms of screen resolution on a mobile device – but that title could soon be relinquished as Toshiba has unveiled an LCD panel with a resolution of 498 pixels per square inch (ppi).

Currently the 326 ppi resolution of Apple’s 3.5in Retina Display is top-dog when it comes to screen resolution but the new 6.1in panel from Toshiba is set to wipe the floor with Apple’s offering.

The Toshiba panel will have a display resolution format of 2,560 x 1,600 and it will have a contrast ratio of 1000:1 compared to 800:1 on the Retina Display. Toshiba promises that the new panel will achieve high-definition images with “photographic quality” and “although the images are displayed in 2D format, they impart a sense of depth and realism.”

Vertical and horizontal viewing angles of 176 degrees are promised, which should make it ideal for use on tablets, and the panel will be able to display 16.7 million colours, covering 61 per cent of the NTSC colour gamut.

Toshiba also hinted that the panels could be used to display 3D images in the future which could provide a high resolution glasses-free 3D display to replace the current low resolution ones, as seen on the 3DS.

Toshiba has not said when the panels will go into production but what we want to know is, at 6.1in, is the panel just too small for a tablet or too big for a smartphone? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
