Toshiba Thrive 7in Android Tablet Revealed

Toshiba has announced a smaller 7in version of its Thrive 10.1in tablet, also known in the UK as the AT100. The new Thrive 7in, which will apparently be its official name, isn’t quite the same tablet as its bigger sibling though. For one thing, though it sports the same look plus comfy rubberised and textured back, it loses the two things that made Toshiba’s Android tablet really stand out from the competition: its interchangeable battery and full-size ports.

Instead of the standard equivalents, it now offers micro versions of USB, HDMI and SD. However, that’s still pretty impressive for a tablet of this size. Even more so is that it packs a whopping 1,280 x 800 pixels, making for an incredibly crisp and sharp display that - if it’s something better than TN, like PVA or IPS - should prove a key selling point. Others are bringing this resolution to 7in and smaller devices, but the mini-Thrive (as we’ve affectionately dubbed it) should be one of the first to market. Toshiba Thrive 7in

Other details are more humdrum, with a Tegra 2 CPU/GPU backed by 1GB of RAM and 16 or 32GB of storage. It runs Android 3.2 Honeycomb, largely unmodified. It will be lighter than the original Samsung Galaxy Tab, though not as light as the Galaxy Tab 7.7. However, it does win out in other areas such as connectivity.

Pricing has not yet been confirmed but, as the tablet should be released in December, we won’t have to wait too much longer to find out. So are you excited or would you rather have seen a 7in Toshiba AT200? Let us know in the comments.
