Toshiba has jumped the gun on the Windows 8.1 arrival, unveiling the Toshiba Encore at IFA 2013 as an 8-inch tablet which will run Microsoft’s next OS.

Set to touch down later this year, the 8-inch Toshiba Encore will be head-to-head with the likes of the iPad mini and Samsung Galaxy Note 8, partnering its Windows 8.1 innards with a free copy of Microsoft Office Home and Student 2013 preinstalled on the device.

The lines between business and consumer use are becoming increasingly blurred, so companion devices need to offer multiple possibilities to cater for both needs” Matt McDowell, Marketing Director at Toshiba Europe said in unveiling the Encore.

He added: “With the Encore, customers can expect a full PC experience in an 8” tablet - including a rich, powerful Windows 8.1 experience that meets the differing professional and personal needs of users throughout their entire day.”

Toshiba Encore Features

Lining up at a less than svelte 10.68mm thick, the Toshiba Encore is a reasonably specced tablet offering, with the device’s 8-inch display being of a 1280 x 800 pixel HD LCD variety.

With an Intel Atom chipset running the show, the Windows 8.1 operating system will be partnered with 2GB of RAM, Intel Gen 7 graphics and a considerable 64GB of internal storage.

Packing an 8-megapixel rear-mounted camera alongside a secondary 2-megapixel snapper up front, the Toshiba Encore adds stereo speakers and a raft of connectivity options. While the usual Wi-Fi and Bluetooth options are present, micro USB and micro HDMI ports also make the cut.

In an attempt to up the glam factor of its latest tablet offering, Toshiba has bestowed the Encore with a light gold hue.

Toshiba Encore Release Date and Price
Although an exact Toshiba Encore price has yet to be confirmed for British shores, on the continent the tablet will set you back €299 (£252).

Again, while a precise Toshiba Encore release date is still somewhat up in the air, the manufacturer has stated that the device will land during Q4 2013 and be available in time for the holiday season.
