We never like it when manufacturers decide to call the same product different names in different regions – it just makes our head hurt. Only this morning we’ve see new models from Canon coming to the UK under the IXUS name, but in the US the very same cameras will be called Elph.
Toshiba is guilty of a similar failing with its latest ultra-thin tablet. When we originally got our hands on it at IFA last September, the 10.1in tablet was called the AT200 but when we got to CES in Las Vegas earlier this year, we were looking at the Toshiba Excite X10.
However, announcing the availability of the tablet in the UK from next week, Toshiba has reverted to the original AT200 name. We’re not sure why, maybe Toshiba thought us UK residents couldn’t handle the exciting Excite X10 name.
Aside from that, the big news is that the Toshiba AT200 will be available exclusively in Carphone Warehouse stores from 15 February next week and will cost £399 for the 16GB version or £449 for the 32GB version. The current market leader, the iPad 2 costs the same for the 16GB model, but is £30 more expensive for the 32GB model. Both also come with a free case.
The AT200 is just 7.7mm thin and features a 10.1in 1280×800 screen, a 1.2GHz OMAP 4430 processor, 1GB of RAM, microSD card slot, microUSB and microHDMI ports, and weighs just 535g. However, the AT200 will come with Android 3.2 (Honeycomb) rather than the more recent Ice Cream Sandwich update – with no word from Toshiba of a future update.
With the iPad 3 just around the corner, Toshiba’s tablet may have missed the boat and could begin to look very dated when compared to Apple’s new tablet as well as the quad-core Tegra 3 Android tablets set to join the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime.
