Check out our full hands-on with the Toshiba Portégé Z830 Series here

IFA, Berlin: Last May, when Intel announced a new type of laptop, the Ultrabook, it promised that more manufacturers would be coming in the autumn, and now here’s Toshiba with its offering.

The 13.in Toshiba Portégé Z830 Series will no doubt be looking to go head-to-head with the other Ultrabooks we’ve seen previously, like the Aspire 3951 from Acer, as well as the MacBook Air of course.

The Z830 comes encased in a magnesium and aluminum alloy shell and at its thinnest point measures just 16mm thick. Toshiba is claiming the Z830 is the world’s “lightest 13in platform” and weighs just 1.11kg, which just about puts it ahead of the 13in MacBook Air, Samsung Series 9 and the Sony Vaio Z.

Despite this sleek form, Toshiba manages to cram in some decent connectivity. For your money you’ll get two USB 2.0, one USB 3.0, VGA out, SD card reader, Ethernet, and HDMI, which is a lot more than most Ultrabooks. Oh and there’s a backlit keyboard.

Inside, the Toshiba Portégé Z830 offers a range of Sandy Bridge silicon from i3, i5 and i7; integrated graphics and a range of SSD options. The 8 cell battery promises to give you 8 hours of battery life but of course we'll have to take Toshiba's figure with a pinch of salt.

The Toshiba Portégé Z830 will be available in November and will come with a base price of just under $1,000 in the US (we are awaiting UK pricing from Toshiba).
