See? We weren't lying

There's no shortage of retro game emulators online and on smartphones, but we've not seen anything quite like Tiny Arcade before.

It's a set of retro arcade cabinets shrunk down to fit in your hand. Despite their minuscule size, they retain the classic control stick and button layout. Though you might have to squint to make out the action on the tiny OLED screen.

The games are lovingly ripped off from classic titles. Tiny Invaders is a thinly-veiled rip-off of Space Invaders, for example. 3D Attack is Doom, Flappy Birdz is Flappy Bird, and Mushroom Jumper is Super Mario Bros. But they're all free to download from the Tiny Arcade website.

Inside the cabinet is TinyCircuits, a modular Arduino-compatible set of circuit boards that stack together like Lego. It's open source, so you can make games for it yourself. But you don't need any specialist knowledge to play – just load the games using a microSD card and enjoy.

It also plays MP4 video files, complete with sound. Though you're not going to get the full cinematic experience.

You can order the cabinet pre-assembled, or a DIY kit that you build yourself. You don't need any special tools, the pieces just snap together. You should be up and running in under 10 minutes.

It's raised almost $10,000 of a $25,000 target, and has 29 days to go. It can be yours for $60 (£39). If successful, it will ship in March.
