TIME magazine has named the iPhone as the most influential gadget of all time.
The respected publication has compiled a list of the 50 pieces of tech that have “forever changed the way we live, work, and play,” and Apple’s smartphone takes the top spot.
“Apple was the first company to put a truly powerful computer in the pockets of millions,” claims TIME, ushering in “a new era of flat, touchscreen phones.”
Allied to the iPhone’s success was the rise of the mobile app, “forever changing how we communicate, play games, shop, work, and complete many everyday tasks.”
Apple is represented elsewhere on the list, too, with the Macintosh at number three, the iPod at number nine, the iPad at number 25, and the iBook at number 38.
Other notable repeat entrants include Sony, with the Trinitron TV at number two, the Walkman at number four, the PlayStation at number 31, and the Discman at number 40.

Nintendo has three devices on the list: the NES at number 15, the Game Boy at number 16, and the Wii at number 32.
Motorola also does well, with the Bravo Pager at number 18, the Droid at number 20 (known as the Milestone outside of the US), and the Dynatac 8000x cellular phone at 37.
