Three tells customers to use Skype and WhatsApp to dodge MMS price hike

UK mobile operator Three has advised customers to send photo and video messages via messaging apps like Skype and WhatsApp rather than use MMS.

The network caused a storm last week when it announced it was more than doubling the price of sending multimedia messages from 17.4p to 40p.

Now the company says (via Telegraph) customers should use their data allowance through IM apps, in order to avoid the costs.

There are other ways to send multimedia messages whilst keeping the costs at bay. Mobile applications are probably the most popular method. In fact some of them, like Skype are preloaded on most of our phones,” Three said.

“Also, all of our tariffs include internet allowance so using applications like Skype, WhatAapp, Facebook Messenger or Viber to name a few, for sending MMS will use the data included in your package.”

While that information will be obvious to many tech savvy customers, it’ll be useful for those who might be new to smartphones and mobile app stores.
