This is heavy: Auto-lacing shoes hit Kickstarter

It seems Back to the Future II wasn’t so far-fetched after all. We’ve had the first working hoverboard, and now comes a pair of auto-lacing shoes, just like those worn by Marty McFly in the time-travelling sequel.

They’re called Powerlace, and they lace up on their own without you having to tie tiresome knots. Just slot your foot in, and it’ll activate a small lever at the lower rear end of the shoe, engaging the lacing system’s mechanism.

You can adjust it for the best fit, too, using the lace lock system. Once you’ve adjusted it once, it will stay at that tightness until you change it.

Nylon-coated stainless steel wires allow the shoe to open up wide. The laces themselves are made of heavy-duty material that should last a long time, and withstand tension exceeding 250lbs.

The only downer is the shoe itself doesn’t look anywhere near as cool as the iconic Nike Mag. That shoe was sold for a charity auction back in 2011, but sadly lacked the power lace feature.

It might not be quite the same as in the film, but the Powerlace is waterproof and hardwearing, and doesn’t need any batteries to work. And it comes in three colour schemes: black and orange, black and blue, and black and green.

Pledge your support early via the Kickstarter page and a pair can be yours for just $175 (£112). It’s due to start shipping in May next year.
