The BMW has unveiled a new concept car in a bid to tease the company’s ‘biggest model offensive’ ever.
At this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, BMW showed off the new BMW Concept 8 Series, a modern coupe with a strikingly fierce design. The car is described as being a taster for the forthcoming BMW 8 Series Coupe, which is currently expected to launch in 2018.

“The number 8 has always represented the pinnacle of sports performance and exclusivity at BMW,” explained Harald Krüger, Chairman at BMW. “The forthcoming BMW 8 Series Coupe will demonstrate that razor-sharp dynamics and modern luxury can go hand-in-hand. This will be the next model in the expansion of our luxury-car offering and will raise the benchmark for coupes in the segment.”
Krüger added: “In the process, we will strengthen our claim to leadership in the luxury class.”
According to BMW, the new BMW 8 Series Coupe will be part of a huge bid to significantly increase sales and revenues in the firm’s luxury vehicle class.
The BMW Concept 8 Series features a low body, a long bonnet, and a flowing roofline – all familiar tenets of recent BMW design. There’s a custom-designed Barcelona Grey Liquid paint finish, and large 21-inch light-alloy wheels with an exclusive multi-spoke design.
The front of the car is low-slung and pretty striking, featuring a large kidney grille and slim twin headlines, as well as large air intakes for that distinctly sporty look.
Speaking about the concept, Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior VP of BMW Group Design, said: “The BMW Concept 8 Series is our take on a full-blooded high-end driving machine. It is a luxurious sports car which embodies both unadulterated dynamics and modern luxury like arguably no other. For me, it’s a slice of pure automotive fascination.”
He continued: “The design of the BMW Concept 8 Series provides a fresh interpretation of iconic BMW styling cues. And it also showcases a new approach to the use of forms which is reflected particularly prominently in the car’s surfacing. A handful of crisp lines mark out clear surfaces, and the car’s volumes are powerfully sculpted.”
“Together, these elements make a forceful statement and create a model brimming with character. In short, this is a driver’s car,” Hooydonk added.
Inside the car, you’ll find Merino leather in Dark Brown and Fjord White, as well as carbon fibre and hand-polished aluminium surfaces. There’s an iDrive Controller made from Swarovski glass, and a faceted ground gearshift lever too.
