Lenovo has made the ThinkPad Tablet 2 available for pre-order.

The company's first Windows 8 tablet is available to buy from the Lenovo website, with an estimated shipping date of January 8 - in the US at least.

The tablet will come in three variants. All will have 64GB of internal storage, a 1.8GHz Intel Atom processor, a 10.1-inch WXGA (1366 x 768) screen and 2GB of RAM.

The entry-level model will start from $649, and the $679 model will include a pen and digitiser, whilst for $729 you'll also get Windows 8 Pro with its extra business-oriented capabilities.

You'll have to splash out an extra $119 if you want the package to include the Bluetooth keyboard peripheral that turns the ThinkPad Tablet 2 into a laptop.

Unlike the Microsoft Surface, which runs on the cut back Windows RT OS, the ThinkPad Tablet 2 will run on full Windows 8 OS. Despite this, it weighs less than 600 grams and is less than 10mm thick.

The digitiser layer that we mentioned above means that the ThinkPad Tablet 2 can detect the bundled stylus even before it touches the display, which means it can be wielded as a cursor rather than a prodding device. When you do make contact, it can also sense variances in pressure, allowing for natural handwriting to name just one application of the technology.
