There’s some really good news for WhatsApp users

Luke Johnson

WhatsApp users, rejoice. Despite having recently announced plans to kill support for hundreds of devices, the Facebook-owned messenger has had a last minute change of heart.

With support for BlackBerry and Nokia devices having been scheduled to be knocked on the head “by the end of 2016”, WhatsApp has now reversed its decision.

Instead, WhatsApp has confirmed that support for BlackBerry 10, BlackBerry OS, Nokia Series 40 and Sybian Series 60 based handsets will be extended until June 30, 2017.

Sure, that’s only six months away, but if you’re still rocking one of these aged handsets, that’s six crucial months to score yourself and upgrade or make a casual migration to a new messaging platform.

Despite offering a stay of execution for some devices, not all platforms are escaping the cull.

Before the year’s out, support will be ceased for devices running Windows 7.x, iOS 6 and both Android 2.1 Eclair and Android 2.2 Froyo.

Why? Well as well as the relatively tiny number of these devices still in use, according to WhatsApp it’s all about a lack of progression options.

“While these mobile devices have been an important part of our story, they don’t offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future,” the company is reported to have said.

Run WhatsApp on a recent iOS or Android device such as the iPhone 7 or Samsung Galaxy S7? Then you’ve not got a thing to worry about, WhatsApp will support your handset for years to come.

That announcement was a month ago; where have you been?

Will the imminent upgrade to 10.3.3 for BlackBerry 10 devices, and further future upgrades, is it likely that WhatsApp will become/remain compatible with BB10 (or, alternatively, that BB10 will become/remain compatible with WhatsApp) for more than another mere six months?
And, yes, I still use a BlackBerry; a Z10. It does all that I want. Although I do use WhatsApp, I can get along without it and feel no pressing need to buy a new device for the sake of one app.

Yes. I'm using BlackBerry, and see no better option for my work. Even if WhatsApp will stop working in future, another WhatsApp app from another developer will appear in BlackBerry World.

Hello. I am also using the BB10 and keen to upgrade the new version. This is the best device which I have to fulfill all my business needs in a secure way. Mine is Z10 and I wish to upgrade it. Plesae release an upgrade which must have the functionality of FM in Music section.

Using a Blackberry Passport and loving it. Don't care much for WhatsApp, it's too much unsecure to put on my phone.

Aged (BB10) you really don't know what you're talking about? My Passport has been my daily driver and flawless at that. My work Iphone has crapped out twice and the two Android devices I bought my kids both died since. I like reliable not a toy. As for whatscrapp who cares! It's owned by Facebook so I will have no part in it, BBM is all I need.

I myself still use both a Blackberry Passport and a Blackberry Priv. The Priv is fine, it runs Android Marshmallow. But the Passport will sadly lose Whatsapp access- at least, native Whatsapp access. Just like it lost it's native Facebook client and native Facebook Messenger.

I was able to install the Android version of Whatsapp on it via sideloading, but that version of course integrates into the Hub not as well as the BB10 version, but it's better than nothing.

Love it. I love my Passport SE and I will not be switching to another phone just because whatsapp continues support or not.

BlackBerry Leap user. Don't give a toss about WhatsApp. Removed it a year ago already and been living without the App since. BBM and Telegram is enough. Friends have also migrated away. No care for for any app that you have to get a new phone to use.
