The Sony Xperia X Compact is the phone noone was expecting

It seems all the phone leaks of late have focused on the imminent iPhone 7, but today we’ve got something slightly more unexpected.

Sony recently ditched its Z-series of smartphones in favour of the new X series, made up of the Xperia X, Xperia X Premium, and the more modest Xperia XA.

And while many expected the latter to take the place of the company’s ‘Compact’ model, it seems we’ve got it all wrong.

Reputable tipster Evan Blass, aka @evleaks, has seemingly revealed a new ‘Xperia X Compact’ phone in a tweet posted on Thursday.

And if Blass’ leak isn’t enough to convince you that Sony’s adding yet another smartphone to its latest lineup, there’s more X Compact news.

The company’s own Dutch website has also seemingly leaked the device, with links to the Xperia X Compact appearing on the site before being spotted by observers (via SlashGear).

Even more intriguing, a link to a new ‘Xperia XZ’ phone was also spotted, suggesting Sony has more than just the new Compact model in-store.

The XZ device is a complete mystery, but what can we expect from the Compact phone?

Details are obviously sparse at this time, but if previous models are anything to go by, we can expect to see a 4.7-inch device with similar, but lower, specs to the flagship model.

Sony might just put an end to all the mystery at IFA, which is set to get underway next week. We’ll keep you updated with all the news from the big tech show in Berlin as it happens, so stay tuned.
