High-end hi-fi manufacturer Sonus Faber has just launched a new speaker system with a difference.
And “launched” is an appropriate word in this case, as when the Sonus Faber Sf16 deploys its party trick it looks like it’s about to take off.
Two satellite speakers sprout slowly from the sumptuous wood-wrapped sides when the Sf16’s switched on, providing treble and mid-range to go with the two 5-inch subwoofers pumping bass from the main unit.

It’s a modern-day reboot of the company’s Snail system of the early ‘80s, which was pretty outlandish for its day. Design’s come a long way since then, though…
With this being 2016 and all, of course there’s some form of wireless connectivity in the Sf16, and it comes in the (invisible) shape of Wi-Fi. The usual slew of streaming services, from Tidal and Spotify to Rhapsody and Songza, are all supported and it’ll play Hi-Res Audio files up to 24-bit/192MHz. Traditional plug-worshippers have the choice of RCA phono and coaxial or optical digital.
The Sonus Faber Sf16 will cost an eye-watering £9,900 when it arrives in September. It weighs 25kg, though, so, y’know, in terms of price per pound…
