The Raspberry Pi foundation has announced a much improved pair of camera boards, thanks to the addition of an 8-megapixel Sony sensor.
The new sensor will replace the OmniVision OV5647 5-megapixel sensor, supplies of which are now running low. Originally the company had bought them up in bulk, but the sensor was discontinued at the end of 2014.
The Foundation says, as a result, it has tapped up Sony to provide the IMX219 8-megapixel sensor, which is available today from the usual retail partners.
Best news of all is that new infrared and visual light modules will be available for the same low price of $25 (£19).

In a post on the Raspberry Pi blog, CEO Eden Upton wrote: “
The module can capture 1080p video at 30 frames per second, while photo resolution comes in at 3280 x 2464.
