A YouTube performer, whose early efforts helped establish the viral video age, has returned to the scene of her former glories.
Fans of the channel Lonelygirl15 were surprised to see new content appear on YouTube for the first time in seven years.
The teen confessional videos starring ‘Bree’ began appearing on this date a decade ago and garnered millions of views to become the most subscribed channel on YouTube.
The series, which was later revealed to be scripted with Bree and her friends performed by actors, is credited with pioneering the style that has helped hundreds of content creators achieve fame through the channel.
Despite the revelations of its fictional nature, the series continued to gain popularity, more characters and more complex storylines centred around a mysterious religion.
All of a sudden, in 2009, with YouTube now in the hands of Google, the web series disappeared without a trace.
Now Bree is back with a mysterious video about what it meant to her to be “selected.”
Co-creator Flinders told the Guardian how difficult it would be to repeat the success in the modern climate: He said: “On YouTube now we wouldn’t get away with this for 30 seconds. People would know she’s fake immediately.
“No one will ever trust anyone on YouTube again at face value.”
Counterpart Miles Beckett added: “I didn’t think it would go on as long as it did. I was a little surprised that the mystery of whether or not it was real lasted as long.”
