PlayStation 5 may never happen

While Sony reportedly prepares an updated PS4 console with upgraded innards and 4K support, the prospect of a PlayStation 5 is far less certain, it has emerged.

A report this week casts doubt on whether Sony will choose to launch a new home games console once this cycle is over.

It all started over a year ago when PlayStation president Shuhei Yoshida told gaming expert Noel Lanning that the PS5 was an ‘if’ rather than ‘when.’

Speaking on this week’s Game Informer Show, Lanning revealed the February 2015 chat for the first time.

Lanning said (via GameSpot): "I said, 'What does the PlayStation 5 look like?' And he said, 'You mean if...' And I was like, 'Whoa. Are you willing to say that on stage?' And he said, 'Yeah, it's an if.'"

The topic did not come up during the presentation at the DICE event and, apparently, hadn’t been mentioned since.

Given Sony has enjoyed 20+ years of incredible success in the gaming world, it would be difficult to imagine the company departing from the PlayStation name.

However, if Sony does jump the gun with the mid-cycle upgrade it may add a few more years of viability to the current generation.

By then, the idea of a home gaming machine might be very, very different.

Incremental updates every 3 years with all games being backwards and up to a point forwards compatible...essentially a PC gaming set up.

Such a sensational title.

Typical Sony BS. Remember when 3D tv was going to change gaming forever?

If they acknowledge the existence of a PS 5 then people might wait for it and not buy PS 4.5.

I guarantee PS 5 is announced in 3 years.

And the next update after this one wouldn't be called Playstation 5? It's gotta have a name doesn't it? How would you tell one from the other?

It's all marketing speak from Sony. They probably want to act like PS5 doesn't exist because they want people to buy ps 4.5 now and not wait for ps5.

lol when it came out i said itll be out of date within a year, then GTA5 was released on PC and i laughed at the HUGE quality difference, now PS4 wasnt 4K.... well done, only about a year or two later and already you need to upgrade the console xD i dont understand why people waste money on them i truly dont, better quality better access more features and ability and smoother framerate... compared with... what have consols got to offer over a PC again? hmmm i use a PS3 controller on my PC so its its not handling, first person shooters dont require a built in autoaim function like they use on console versions hmmm, could it be the 10% savings in price? yeah because thats worth the amount you lose out on by buying a console xD stop getting ripped off people.
