The Nintendo Switch dock has no additional CPU or GPU power

Nintendo has confirmed the dock for the Nintendo Switch is mainly for charging the handheld unit and connecting to the television.

The gaming giant’s rather vague reveal trailer yesterday left it unclear whether the home experience was superior to handheld in any way, beyond the larger display.

The short answer is ‘no,’ as it seems there’s no additional processing tech nestling within that handsome stationary element.

“The dock is not the main console unit of Nintendo Switch,” a Nintendo spokesperson revealed told IGN.

“The main unit of Nintendo Switch is the unit that has the LCD screen, which the two Joy-Con controllers can be attached to and detached from. The main function of the Nintendo Switch Dock is to provide an output to the TV, as well as charging and providing power to the system.”

This isn’t necessarily a negative as it means handheld users will not have to suffer a lesser experience when using the console on the go.

Nintendo’s entire plan seems to be merging the home and portable worlds in a manner that offers none of the traditional sacrifices of portable gaming.
