The next Mac OS X could just be plain old macOS

Apple may be planning a slight brand rebrand of its Mac OS X operating system, judging by a file spotted within the latest El Captian update.

A developer (via SlashGear) has tracked down a reference to macOS within a feature assigned for flight tracking, but does not appear to be operational within the most recent update.

TrustedReviews has independently confirmed the existence of the file, as you can see below.

So what does this mean? Well it may be that Apple is planning to rename of its desktop operating system to match iOS, tvOS and watchOS.

It would make sense wouldn’t it? Especially given the current version goes by the rather clunky name of Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11.4.

Apple is expected to take the wrapper off the newest version of OS X at WWDC in June, before a consumer release in September 2016.

Perhaps this could be the year all of Apple’s software platforms finally share the same naming convention? Not a huge deal, but at least it’ll help with our OCD.
