The LG V20 just landed a sucker punch on the iPhone 7 and Galaxy S8 – here's why

LG V20

LG has announced that buyers of its forthcoming V20 modular smartphone will get B&O PLAY headphones bundled with their handset at no extra cost as it looks to take the fight to the iPhone 7 and Galaxy S8.

Combined with being one of the first non-Nexus devices to get Android Nougat, LG looks like it's seriously upping the smartphone stakes as it gets set to unveil its next flagship.

News of the latest development in the growing partnership between LG and B&O PLAY was announced by the two companies in a predictably glowing press release.

"The collaboration with LG provides a wonderful opportunity to showcase B&O PLAY’s expertise in terms of audio technology, design excellence and user-centred philosophy. With the new LG V series smartphone, users will experience a new premium sound experience that they have never heard before," said B&O PLAY president Henrik Taudorf Lorensen.

Juno Cho, president of LG Electronics and Mobile Communications, added: "I’m pleased about our close partnership with B&O PLAY which started earlier this year with Hi-Fi Plus with B&O PLAY and continues today with the V20."

The LG V20, of course, has been long rumoured to feature above-average audio – we already know it's going to be the first phone to pack a 32-bit Quad DAC chip, for example.

What remains to be seen is the quality of the B&O PLAY earbuds, which are apparently being developed specially for LG.

While B&O has a long lineage in high-end audio, its B&O PLAY sub-unit is a distinct entity from the original luxury Bang & Olufsen brand, focussing on (comparatively) more entry-level consumer products rather than pricey audiophile kit.

Whatever the case, the V20's B&O-made headphones can't really be any worse than the Happy Meal-quality buds that usually ship with smartphones, so we're definitely keen to watch this space.

The LG V20 is set to be unveiled at a special launch event on September 6, though whether or not it eventually makes its way to the UK remains to be seen.

I just hope LG keeps to the removable battery if they have that they will have my money. The headphones are a nice touch all the same

Why manufactures just do not include Voper4Android? No one is beating them in sound quality.

The B&O Play 7 were the most luxurious Bluetooth headphones I ever experienced, yes, before you ask, they sounded wonderful despite being 'only' 40 mm drivers.

To get free ones I'd even take an iPhone contract.
There. That should get the ball rolling.

At first I thought, oh no they're putting a Porsche engine in a Kia; then I thought back to the G4 and began to have some hope.

I know you shouldn't look a gift house in the mouth, but If they are just talking about a pair of crappy earbuds for incentive , that would be a huge disappointment , why even bother.
A 10 buck voucher towards some proper headphones would be far more useful imo.
Samsung threw in a gear vr on the s7.

I have the LG V10 and it has a 3000 milliamp battery that's going to be a nice jump to a 4000 milliamp Battery Plus the it's removable too. I definitely think I will upgrade to the new v20 when it comes out. I love the battery life on my V10 so the V20 should be a lot better, At least somewhat better especially with Nugget. I'm looking forward to seeing It when they release it.

Don't know anything about Voper but apart from the obvious (headphones) sound quality is dictated by the quality of the DAC chip, both in recording (especially) and play back. Software will only do so much but decent EQ can definitely compensate for bad headphones. Sounds like a massive leap forward but the real issue is that MP3 is inherently poor quality anyway but people are used to it these days.

Viper4Android is the main reason I use Android. It is absolutely amazing. Don't think it would be realistic to have it part of stock firmware but I love you're idea. 🖒
