The iPhone 7 Plus could have dual rear cameras

It’s going to be some time before a new iPhone arrives, but information about possible features is already starting to surface.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo released a research note, acquired by Mac Rumours, in which he says Apple is working on a version of the iPhone 7 Plus with two rear cameras.

Kuo, often a reliable source when it comes to tech rumours, explains that Apple may be working on two versions of the handset – one with a single iSight rear-facing camera and another with the dual camera design.

The iPhone 7 Plus will likely benefit from Apple’s acquisition last year of Israeli camera tech company LinX Imaging.

LinX technology allows for multiple sensors which reduces the size of the camera system.

This makes a lot of sense in light of Apple being granted permission for a smaller spherical photosensor and lens array, which does away with the camera bump on the back of handsets, this week.

The dual camera design predicted by Kuo would likely be used to produce high-res images rather than two separate or 3D images.

It would also include lenses with better light sensitivity and greatly improved low-light image capture.

Kuo also notes the ability of LinX tech to simulate optical zoom, predicting a 2 to 3x optical zoom function in the iPhone 7 Plus.

The new handset is expected to come in both single-camera and dual-camera versions rather than all models featuring the new design.

Kuo puts this down to ‘supply chain constraints’.

There’s obviously been no official word from Apple on the dual camera design, and it could be that we will have to wait until the iPhone 8 until we see the LinX tech in an Apple handset.
