The 4K Chromecast Ultra will double the price tag, report claims

The rumored 4K-ready Chromecast Ultra streaming device will cost twice as much the current HD iteration, according to reports.

According to AndroidPolice sources, which earlier on Friday predicted a new Google Wii router, the updated dongle will be $69, compared with the $35 asking price for the 2nd-gen Chromecast.

The source says Chromecast Ultra will be HDR enabled, but regardless, it would be disappointing to see Google double down on the price tag, when the Chromecast range is renowned for its good value.

Google Chromecast 4K:
What is it and when will it launch?

The Chromecast Ultra is expected to arrive at Google’s Pixel launch event on October 4, alongside Google Home device previewed at I/O.

In better news for Google fans, today’s report also claims the Amazon Echo-rivalling Google Home speaker will be available for $129. That would undercut the Echo by $40.

With the advantage of Google’s conversational Assistant technology on board, the Echo may face a run for its money.

Would you pay twice as much for a Chromecast with 4K capabilities? Is Echo vs Home shaping up to be the tech battle of 2017? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
