Tesla has sent out invites to its April 30 special launch event, teasing an important new announcement.
The all-white invite heralds "The Missing Piece" above a partial outline of a slightly curved white box. What on earth could it be?
Actually, we have a pretty good idea of what it will be. Tesla CEO Elon Musk might have been teasing a "major new Tesla product line" that wasn't a car in recent months, but others in the company haven't been so cryptic.
Last week, Tesla’s VP of investor relations Jeff Evanson took to BuzzFeed to let the cat out of the bag.
"We have decided to share a bit about what we will announce on the 30th," wrote Evanson. "We will introduce the Tesla home battery and a very large utility scale battery. We will explain the advantages of our solutions and why past battery options were not compelling."
So much for striking an enigmatic tone with those teasers, eh? Still, nice invite (via The Verge).
Of course, we don't know precisely what form these home batteries will take, how much they'll cost, or any other specific details. We'd expect any such device to serve as a charger for Tesla's range of premium electric cars, and it's rumoured that the batteries will be better able to harness solar energy.

A weekend Guardian report, meanwhile, suggested that the home batteries will be available for an initial $1,500 (£983) payment, followed by $15 (£9.84) monthly payments for 10 years.
Regardless, we're excited to see what Tesla turns up on April 30 - spoilers or no spoilers.
