Tesla’s new video lets you see what its driverless cars see

Tesla recently announced that its cars will now be produced with new hardware that will allow them to be fully autonomous.

The new range of hardware and software features will enable “full self-driving capability at a safety level substantially greater than that of a human driver,” according to the company.

And now, you can see for yourself just how the technology works, as Tesla has released a new video showcasing the autonomous system.

The clip was shared by Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Twitter, and shows a fully-autonomous car driving itself around (the passenger is there just in case something goes awry) along with three screens that show what the car’s cameras and sensors are picking up.

Tesla’s vehicle recognises lane lines, road signs, and streetlights, tracks passing cars in all directions and generally puts on an impressively comprehensive show that provides a ressuring look at just how ‘aware’ the company’s driverless vehicles are.

While all cars produced by Tesla will come with the necessary software and hardware to drive themselves without human intervention, the technology has to be tested fully before it can be activated.

The new hardware includes eight surround cameras with 360-degree visibility at up to 250 meters of range, and twelve updated ultrasonic sensors capable of detecting objects at nearly twice the distance of the previous system.

Tesla has also added an enhanced forward-facing radar which can see through heavy rain, fog, dust and even, says Tesla, the car ahead.

Along with a new on-board computer, this allows for “a view of the world that a driver alone cannot access, seeing in every direction simultaneously and on wavelengths that go far beyond the human senses.”

There’s no word yet on when exactly the new system will go live but this video has us excited to see the new tech in action in the real world.
