The cavalcade of positive press surrounding Tesla’s electric cars ground to a sudden halt on Tuesday, with questions now being posed about the reliability of the flagship Model S.
The influential Consumer Reports website has pulled its Holy Grail-like 'Recommended' rating for the e-car, after receiving reports from 1,400 Tesla owners for its annual reliability study.
The data pulled in by the respected customer champion compelled it to give Telsa a “worse than average overall problem rate.”
Consumer Reports has received a range of complaints regarding the 2013 model’s drivetrain, while malfunctioning touchscreens in the centre console are also prominent.
“The main problem areas involved the drivetrain, power equipment, charging equipment, giant iPad-like center console, and body and sunroof squeaks, rattles, and leaks,” Consumer Reports wrote.

As the issues are under the Tesla warranty, most users are getting them fixed without too much hassle. However, warranties run out so it’ll be interesting to see how these cars hold up to 10 years on the road.
The news has sent Tesla’s stock down a whopping 10 per cent on Tuesday, as investors go into full on panic mode.
Tesla is yet to comment on the report, but Elon Musk isn’t one to keep quiet on these matters, so we’ll surely be hearing from the CEO soon.
