Temple Run 2 hits 50m downloads in under two weeks

Temple Run 2 has become that fastest growing mobile game ever, breaking the previous record set by Angry Birds Space in 2012.

Downloaded over 50 million times on iOS, Android and Kindle devices, Temple Run 2 reached the huge milestone in just thirteen days. Previous record holder Angry Birds Space reached 50 million downloads 35 days after it was launched.

The widely anticipated sequel from Imangi Studios launched on the Apple iOS App Store on January 17, with releases on the Google Play Store and Amazon Marketplace following a week later. Across all three app stores, the free app soared to the top download spot, achieving over six million downloads on the iOS App Store alone in the first 24 hours.

Its predecessor, Temple Run, has been downloaded over 170 million times since its release in 2011, but Temple Run 2 already seems likely to eclipse this impressive total entirely.

“Temple Run has evolved into something so much bigger than us,” said Keith Shepherd, co-founder of Imangi Studios. “The game has performed beyond our wildest dreams, and we are thrilled that gamers and fans have embraced Temple Run 2 in such a short period of time.”

The game sees an intrepid adventurer attempting to escape from a temple with a golden idol stashed in his or her rucksack. Users must swipe left and right to turn, up and down to jump chasms and slide beneath the odd rocky outcrop. Tilting the device from side to side allows the player to pick up valuable coins and dodge items that would otherwise trip up or kill the plucky adventurer.

Temple Run 2 updated the terrain of the original game by adding zipwires and mine carts to the new landscape of hills and curves. There are four playable characters available, which can be upgraded within the in-app store to improve their abilities and stats.
