ISP TalkTalk has reassured customers a major cyber-attack on its website may not be as bad as first thought
TalkTalk explained the findings of an ongoing investigation in conjunction with the Metropolitan Police Cyber Crime Unit, in an update.
The update advises the TalkTalk website was attacked but that their “core systems” weren’t. The update is accompanied by a video where Chief Executive Dido Harding explains that “the number of customers affected and the amount of data potentially stolen is smaller than originally feared.”
She goes on to say, “no passwords have been stolen and no banking details were taken that you wouldn’t already be sharing when you write a cheque.”

The update also explains that any credit card details that may have been accessed had a series of numbers hidden, making them unusable.
There is still some risk to customers from criminals calling and posing as bank staff in efforts to gain enough information to access their bank accounts.
A 15-year-old boy was arrested in County Antrim in Northern Ireland yesterday in connection with the hack which threatened the security of four million UK customers.
The boy was arrested on suspicion of offences under the Computer Misuse Act and has since been released on bail until a date in November.
The investigations by TalkTalk and the Metropolitan Police Cyber Crime Unit into the cyber attack continue.
