UK provider TalkTalk has announced that it has switched from Vodafone to O2 for its mobile network offering.
The company, which offers a combined internet, TV, landline, and mobile service to its customers, had been in partnership with Vodafone for its mobile network infrastructure since 2010.
Now, however, TalkTalk has revealed a new partnership with Telefonica, the parent company of O2.
According to a joint statement, “Access to the fast growing Telefónica UK 4G network is also a major step forward in our long term strategy to build a small cell and Fibre-To-The-Premise network.”
Boosting its mobile service with 4G capability is part of TalkTalk’s plan to offer a competitive integrated ‘quad-play’ service of internet, TV, phone and mobile. It’s already one of only a couple of companies to offer such a thing.
Virgin Media also offers such a quad-play service, and it’s thought that Sky will soon launch its own mobile network, making it another formidable quad-play competitor.
TalkTalk claims that 9.5% of its customer base (that’s 350,000 out of a total 4 million customers) have opted to take up its mobile offer so far, but it wants this mobile segment to become a core part of its offering.
Access to O2’s 4G network will, it hopes, provide that extra incentive to sign up for the whole package.
