John Legere wants to send you to Mars

The CEO of T-Mobile is willing to pay for someone to fly to Mars with SpaceX – but there’s a catch.

John Legere has pledged to cough up $200,000 for a ride on Elon Musk’s SpaceX voyage to Mars if his competition gets 1,000,000 retweets on Twitter. The free trip, which is tentatively scheduled for 2025, is a way of saying “thanks in an out-of-this-world-way for believing” in the T-Mobile CEO, who recently hit 3,000,000 followers in Twitter.

To enter, all you need to do is retweet the post between 10:00 on October 5, 2016, and 23:59 on October 11, 2016. You’ll need to be the authorised account holder, and you’ll need to keep your retweet free of “lewd or profane” material. You can only enter once, and you’re not allowed to use automated devices to game the system – obviously.

A potential winner will be chosen on October 12 at around noon (Pacific Time), and will be contacted via direct message. If the winner doesn’t respond to the message within three hours – or is ineligible – then a new entrant will be chosen.

Getting to a million tweets is no mean feat, which is why there are runner-up prizes. If Legere manages 100,000 retweets, you could win a zero gravity experience, while 50,000 retweets will net one user a zero gravity chair. And for 10,000 retweets, you could bag a flight to anywhere in the US – not quite Mars, eh?

But Legere might struggle, especially since only two tweets have ever made it past 1,000,000 retweets:

At the time of writing, Legere has only managed around 6,500 retweets, so Legere’s Mars mission might never come to fruition.
