Nintendo US spills beans over SNES Classic pre-orders after epic Walmart fail

Nintendo has announced SNES Classic pre-orders will be available in the US later this month, ahead of the on-sale date of September 29.

A Facebook post on Tuesday comes after major US retailer Walmart accidentally placed the consoles on sale, only to unceremoniously cancel all of the orders the following day.

Nintendo is yet to confirm a specific pre-order date, but did say a ‘significant’ amount of additional consoles are coming to stores on launch day and thereafter.

That would be a significant boost compared with last year’s NES Classic, which proved immensely hard to get once the pre-order period was over.

In the post Nintendo wrote: “We appreciate the incredible anticipation that exists for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition system, and can confirm that it will be made available for pre-order by various retailers late this month.

“A significant amount of additional systems will be shipped to stores for launch day, and throughout the balance of the calendar year.”

Nintendo began pre-orders in the UK weeks ago. So it’s a surprise to see US-based gamers forced to wait for their chance.

The £69.99 console sold out almost instantly in the UK, with fleeting glimpses of stock since.

In the United States most retailers have landing pages for the $79.99 retro device. Aside from the Walmart SNAFU, there has been no way to buy it just yet.

However, when it does go on sale it will arrive pre-loaded with 21 classic games. There’s also the bonus of  the previously-unreleased Star Fox 2.

The full list is as follows:

Contra III: The Alien Wars
Donkey Kong Country
EarthBound
Final Fantasy III
F-ZERO
Kirby Super Star
Kirby’s Dream Course
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Mega Man X

Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting
