SteelSeries Nimbus announced as first third-party Apple TV controller

The SteelSeries Nimbus is the first ever Apple TV controller, even if it is from a third-party.

Although the Apple TV isn’t strictly a gaming device, it has stopped Apple from allowing its new remote control from doubling up as a game controller.

But, as we all know, even though you might dabble in a bit of Flappy Bird with a simple remote control, if you want to do any proper gaming you need a more traditional gamepad.

And for the Apple TV, that’s where SteelSeries comes in. The company just announced the SteelSeries Nimbus, a brand new Bluetooth controller that’s the first to be compatible with the Apple TV.

“SteelSeries is at the centre of the biggest evolution in gaming. Nimbus represents a new standard in wireless gaming controllers and we’re pleased to be bringing this controller to this incredible platform,” said Ehtisham Rabanni, SteelSeries CEO. “Our global gaming pedigree, together with our unyielding pursuit of simple, modern design is on full display with Nimbus. We’re thrilled to deliver a truly premium product for the new Apple TV at a great price.”

The SteelSeries Nimbus comes with a pair of pressure sensitive shoulder buttons, a pair of parallel analogue sticks, the four usual face buttons (looking very Xbox we might add), and a D-Pad on the left.

In the centre is a menu button underneath a light strip that shows which player you are. It seems the Apple TV can support up to four controllers at any time.

The battery lasts over 40 hours and is conveniently rechargeable by Lightning cable.

Along with the Apple TV, the SteelSeries Nimbus is compatible with iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 5, iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S.

In terms of iPads, you can use the Nimbus with the iPad mini, iPad mini 2 and iPad Air along with the fourth generation iPod Touch and Mac.
