Google & Disney build Star Wars VR, coming December 2

Star Wars is stuffed with hi-tech gadgets, so it’s only fitting that we can experience the sci-fi epic in virtual reality.

Google has announced a new collaboration with Disney that will see the launch of VR content based on the Star Wars universe.

The “immersive experience” will be available to view on December 2, arriving just weeks before the December 17 debut of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Disney describes the new content as follows:

This will feature the first-of-its-kind serialized Google Cardboard Virtual Reality (VR) experience that combines a compelling story, which ties directly into the opening of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, with the very latest cutting-edge Virtual Reality technology.”

The virtual reality content was actually created by ILMxLAB, a group that builds “immersive entertainment” for Lucasfilm.

The experience itself will live inside the official Star Wars app, available on both iOS and Android.

Yesterday, Google launched the global Awaken the Force Within program.

The search engine giant debuted a new Star Wars website that let fans choose whether to align themselves with the dark side or the light side of the Force.

As a result of that decisions, fans would see various Google services – like Gmail, Calendar, and Chrome – skinned with a relevant Jedi or Sith theme.
